Reputation Analysis:
The Walt Disney Company is the world's largest media conglomerate with assets in movies, television, publishing, and theme parks. Its Disney/ABC Television Group includes the ABC television network and broadcast stations, as well as cable networks including ABC Family, Disney Channel, and ESPN. Walt Disney Studios produces films through Walt Disney Pictures, Touchstone, and Pixar. In addition, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts operate the company's popular theme parks including Walt Disney World and Disneyland.
While each of Disney's division’s film, television, and theme parks are among the leaders in their respective industries, the company, like other media companies, generates additional revenue by distributing its content through multiple channels. A substantial part of Disney's business also comes from products mostly aimed at children created from its wide library over of characters. The company's Consumer Products division, which includes Disney Publishing Worldwide, makes products such as straight-to-video movies, spin-off books, and licensed apparel.
In 2009 the media giant acquired comic book company Marvel for $4.3 billion. The deal added to Disney's library of characters Iron Man, Spider-Man, and the X-Men, all of which have been turned into successful Hollywood blockbusters. Walt Disney reaped the immediate benefits of this the following year when Iron Man 2 opened at the box office with more than $130 million.
Disney took steps to restructure is movie business by appointing Rich Ross chairman of the studio in 2009. While hoping the new blood would help for better returns at the box office, the move was also part of Disney's focus on creating entertainment franchises. Ross built a track record of creating successful properties such as Hannah Montana and High School Musical while serving as head of Disney Channels Worldwide. Looking to boost its distribution business, Disney inked a distribution deal with Steven Spielberg's DreamWorks studio that same year.
The company's theme park operation is focused on boosting attendance through aggressive marketing campaigns and price cuts. The company continues to invest in improvements to its parks, including a $1 billion effort through 2012 to renovate and upgrade its California Adventure park .Looking to expand its presence in the Asian tourism market, Disney plans to build a $3.6 billion theme park in Shanghai, and it is investing an additional $800 million to expand its Hong Kong Park. Other international Disney park locations include Euro Disney, which operates Disneyland Paris.
On cable TV, meanwhile, Disney continues to enjoy success thanks in large part to its ESPN sports network and the Disney Channel. Like other media companies, Disney is focused on the promise that new technologies hold for entertainment. The company acquired a 30% stake in Hulu in 2009, joining fellow media giants News Corporation and NBCU as a partner in the online video venture. Earlier that same year, the company formed a partnership with video sharing website YouTube to distribute clips from shows on ABC and ESPN.
The company has an extremely strong reputation with all the different forms of media that they are currently involved. Yearly Disney is bring large profits based upon strong partnerships with other companies. A strong example of this is the relation between Disney and Pixar. Pixar has had twelve blockbuster movies in a row, including having the highest grossing movie of this past summer with Toy Story 3. Disney is continually progressing and will continue to grow even larger and more successful as time goes on.
